CSLB exam prep options, compared honestly

Free CSLB materials, free practice tests, AI chat, license schools and us. What each costs, what each is good at, and where each falls short, including us.

First, the rule that matters most: you do not have to go to school to take or pass the CSLB exams, and no school or prep service is affiliated with CSLB. That is CSLB’s own statement. Everything below is optional, so the question is only what gets you through on the first attempt for the least time and money.

1. CSLB’s free materials

What it is. A study guide for every exam, in English and Spanish, with the content outline, section weights and a few sample questions (CSLB study guides). The Contractors License Law & Reference Book, free to read online. The booklet Get Licensed to Build. And a free live workshop, “Get Licensed to Build”, each month in English and in Spanish.

Where it is better than everything else. It is the source. Every other option, us included, is built from these documents, and when a prep product disagrees with CSLB, CSLB wins.

Where it falls short. It tells you what to learn, not whether you have learned it. There are only a handful of sample questions, no scoring by section and no timed practice, and the law book runs to hundreds of pages for a closed-book exam.

2. Free practice tests and flashcard sets

What it is. Practice quizzes and flashcard sets that many websites and users publish for free.

Where they are good. They cost nothing and are a fast way to find out how much you already know.

What to check. Quality varies a lot. Look for the date each set was written and whether each answer names its source, because California numbers change: since 1 January 2025, for example, the retake fee is paid to PSI ($51.43 per exam) rather than the old $100 through CSLB, and older material still shows $100. Our own free test is 25 questions per exam, each with its source: Law and Business, General Building.

3. AI chat assistants

Where they are good. Asking “explain retention on a construction contract like I am new to this” and getting a patient answer, with follow-up questions, in English or Spanish, at any hour. For understanding a concept, that is genuinely useful.

Where they fall short. They can state a California deadline or dollar limit confidently and get it wrong or out of date, often without a source to check. They also do not give you a timed, section-weighted mock in the CSLB format or track which sections you are weak in. If you use one, check every number against CSLB’s law book.

4. License schools

What they cost. Two California schools we checked on 1 October 2026: ustradetest.com lists its B General Building course and its Law and Business course at $249.00 each, with one year of online access. contractorexamschools.com lists four programs from $295.00 (home study) to $1,195.00 (all-inclusive, with live classes). Other schools price differently; check their current pages.

Where they are better than us. A person teaching and answering questions, live or recorded classes, printed manuals, longer access (a year at one of the schools above), and in some cases help with the CSLB application itself. If you learn best in a classroom, or you want someone to check your paperwork, a school gives you something we do not.

Where they fall short. Mostly price: at the two schools above, a course for one exam costs more than our two-exam pass ($99 or $139), and full packages cost far more.

5. CA Contractor Exam (us)

What it is. An online trainer for the Law and Business exam (1,590 questions, 500 flashcards) and the B – General Building exam (1,182 questions, 300 flashcards). Every question in English and Spanish, switchable on any question, each with a plain explanation and the source it comes from. Timed mock exams of 115 questions in 3½ hours, practice by section, a mistakes list, and a readiness check.

Price. One exam: $59 for 90 days or $89 for 180 days. Both exams: $99 for 90 days or $139 for 180 days. One-time payment, no subscription. A 14-day refund if you have used no more than 50 questions and not started a timed mock, and a free access extension if you complete three full mocks and do not pass (refund policy).

Where we fall short. No live classes and no teacher to call: support is by email. No help with the CSLB application. No printed manual. Shorter access than a one-year school course. And we only cover Law and Business and B, not the other trade exams.

How to choose

  • Start free either way. Download the CSLB study guide for your exam and take a free scored test to see your weak sections.
  • If you study well on your own, a question bank with sources and timed mocks is the cheapest way to get exam-ready.
  • If you want a teacher or help with the application, a school is worth its higher price.
  • Whatever you use, check the numbers against CSLB. The exam is built on the law, not on any prep product.

Common questions

Do I need to go to a contractor school to pass?

No. CSLB says you are not required to go to school to take or pass the exam, and no school is officially affiliated with CSLB.

Is there a free way to prepare?

Yes. CSLB’s study guides, its law book and its monthly workshop are free, and many free practice tests exist. What free options usually lack is a large, sourced question bank and timed, scored mock exams.

How much do contractor license schools cost?

Of the two California schools we checked on 1 October 2026, one lists $249.00 per exam course and the other lists programs from $295.00 to $1,195.00. Prices change; check the school’s own page.

Prices checked on each provider’s public website on 1 October 2026 and may have changed since. Provider names are used only to identify them; we have no relationship with any of them. Not affiliated with CSLB or PSI.
