Safety on the B exam: the site, the road and the environment

15% of the B exam, in three parts: keeping people from falling or being buried, keeping traffic away from the work, and handling lead, asbestos, stormwater and debris.

The Law and Business exam has a Safety section too, and it is about the employer: the written program, reporting deadlines, records. That page is here. The B Safety section is about the work itself. Some topics, such as trenches, turn up in both; learn the numbers once.

What CSLB says it covers

  • Personnel safety — guardrails, openings, fall protection, ladders, scaffolds, excavations.
  • Transportation and traffic control — haul vehicles, work zones on public roads, tapers and devices.
  • Environmental safety — lead paint, asbestos, stormwater, construction waste.

T8 = California Code of Regulations, Title 8 (Cal/OSHA). MUTCD formulas are the same in the 2014 edition the study guide lists and in the 2026 edition. Checked 29 September 2026.

Where people lose points

  1. Pick the taper formula by speed. At 45 mph or more, L = W × S. At 40 mph or less, L = W × S² ÷ 60. W is the offset width in feet, S the speed in mph. Using the wrong one is the whole trap.
  2. Slopes are horizontal to vertical. 1½:1 in Type C soil means 1½ feet back for every foot down. The weaker the soil, the flatter the slope.
  3. Ladder angle is a ratio of the working length. One foot out for every four feet of ladder from the foot to the top support.
  4. “Pre-1978” is about when the home was built, not when it was last painted. And window replacement is never a “minor repair,” whatever the area.
  5. One acre counts the whole plan. A lot under an acre still needs stormwater coverage if it is part of a larger common plan of development that disturbs an acre or more.

How the questions tend to read

A site condition, a speed, a soil type or a building date, and one rule to apply. Two examples of our own (not actual exam questions):

You close one 12-ft lane on a road posted at 55 mph. What is the minimum merging taper length?

660 ft. At 45 mph or more, L = W × S = 12 × 55. The trap is 605 ft, from the low-speed formula 12 × 55² ÷ 60.

You slope the sides of an 8-ft-deep excavation in Type C soil instead of shoring it. How far back from the bottom edge must each side reach at the top?

12 ft. The maximum slope in Type C is 1½:1, so 1½ × 8 = 12 ft horizontally on each side. 8 ft would be the Type B answer (1:1).

How to study it

  • Sort by the three headings. Personnel, traffic, environment. Most people only study the first.
  • Do the taper math five times. Low speed and high speed, until choosing the formula is automatic.
  • Read the Title 8 sections above. DIR publishes each free; most are a page or two. The Law and Business Safety page covers reporting, meetings and heat.
  • Budget. About 2½ hours in two weeks and 4 in four (B study plan).

Common questions

What does the Safety section of the B exam cover?

Personnel safety, transportation and traffic control, and environmental safety: about 15% of the exam.

How is a traffic taper length calculated?

L = W × S at 45 mph or more; L = W × S² ÷ 60 at 40 mph or less (W = offset in feet, S = speed in mph).

Is B Safety the same as Law and Business Safety?

No. Law and Business Safety is about the employer's program and reporting duties; B Safety is about the work, traffic and the environment. A few numbers overlap.
